English Language Qualifications
To apply in New Zealand there are some set of qualification you need to have. In New Zealand, the universities and colleges have a certain list of rules and regulations; one of them is English language congruency. Thereby, the admissions are primarily approved on basis of your English language qualifications. The English language schools chiefly offer two types of English language courses:
- The courses which do not give you any specific qualification and
- Those which provide you with certification for English language that helps you pursue higher education at international level.
General English language program
Ordinary English language programs are unable to develop competency in individuals to go abroad and prepare themselves for further studies. Hence, there is a need of a more refined English training programme for the same.
Specific English language program
A specific English language program delivers you a validation of the course that colleges in New Zealand offer. This program of study provides students with an internationally recognized qualification.
Likewise, if you wish to study at a triennial institution for instance, you will have to meet the specific English language requirements. So, the standard of English language you need to compel for the program/course that you seek to pursue has to be internationally approved. The New Zealand schools offer two major English language certificates:
- The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) — This program is used at most of the tertiary institutions in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, and in the United States as well. It assesses your ability on four parameters– reading, writing, speaking and listening in English. Individuals clearing this test with achievable pointers (bands) are accepted for the qualifications. Different countries have multiple band requirements and that totally depends upon the university you choose.
- The Princeton Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) — This certificate is used in many North American institutions/universities. It also tests your ability on the same four parameters: reading, writing and listening, but tests your spoken English abilities as well.
